Lolita's Personality

They should spend at least 2 to 3 hours each day in the outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They love going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. They are not just a wonderful pet, but they are they are also a great companion for children.
These birds can be very loud, despite their affection for them. They can also be a nuisance for those who live nearby. They can be heard making ear-splitting calls and screeches that can be annoying to those living in condos or apartments.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means that males and females are hard to distinguish. Because of this, DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine sex. Once the birds' sex is established the breeding process can begin.

Lolita's care
For a long time activists have been lobbying for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, activists hoped that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to the sea.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, vowed to develop plans with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the actual ocean not a concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that are close to their family members until death. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her departure from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

The move comes following years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary in which she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal problem.
